Social Skills Session: Coping Skills

July 30, 2019

Our Social Skills Teacher Ms. Melissa continues to provide her weekly social skills lessons. This Monday she focused on coping strategies that the kids can use when they feel angry or frustrated. Our students learned about taking deep breaths, squeezing a pillow, and blowing out imaginary candles on their hands. Everyone did an excellent job practicing!  We will continue to integrate this topic in our teaching all week. Teaching strategies to copy with difficult situations or emotions helps students to better self-regulate. They can be individualized based on student preference and skill level.

There is a lot of evidence supporting the use of these strategies and it is very important to continue practicing these strategies in low demand/high reinforcement practice sessions.  Our goal is to develop more functional, practical and appropriate behaviors that help our students navigate the real world!

Go Social sessions! 😊
